The SCA preparation market offers more options than any trainee needs. The common mistake is subscribing to everything and spreading effort too thin. The optimal approach layers different tools at different stages — each serving a distinct purpose.
The Four-Layer Model
Layer 1 — Knowledge Foundation (6-3 months out). Before you practise consulting, ensure you know the medicine. iatroX adaptive quiz for daily clinical knowledge building. NICE CKS and BNF for guideline familiarity. AKT revision (if concurrent) directly supports SCA clinical management.
Layer 2 — Case Exposure (3-2 months out). SCA Revision case bank (£11.99/month) for 350+ expert-written cases with mark-scheme breakdowns. OR SCA Prep (from £14.95/month) for unlimited AI-generated cases. Pick one — both provide case exposure, just through different mechanisms.
Layer 3 — Simulation Practice (2-0 months out). MedTutor AI for voice-based AI patient simulations. OR SCA Prep AI patient roleplays. These tools practise delivery under time pressure. Increase frequency as the exam approaches — from weekly to daily in the final month.
Layer 4 — Feedback (throughout ST3). Clinitalk on real consultations for continuous improvement on your actual consulting style. This layer runs throughout training, not just during dedicated revision.
Optional intensive. Emedica SCA course in the final month for high-fidelity calibration with professional simulated patients.
Anti-Patterns to Avoid
Subscribing to SCA Revision AND SCA Prep AND MedTutor AND Clinitalk simultaneously — you will not use any of them consistently. Starting simulations before your knowledge is solid — you practise communicating wrong answers. Only doing written cases and never practising out loud — reading a case is not the same as consulting.
Budget Planning
The full four-layer stack costs approximately: iatroX (free) + SCA Revision 3 months (£36) + MedTutor Foundation (£195) + Clinitalk 3 months (~£15-30) = approximately £250-260 total. Well within the £600 study budget cap.
Where iatroX Fits
iatroX is Layer 1 — the clinical knowledge foundation that makes every other SCA tool more effective. It is free, so it does not compete with your budget for Layers 2-4.
