Best PLAB 2 Practice Resources: Academies, Study Partners, Official Materials and AI Patients

The best PLAB 2 resource combination covers three different needs: understanding the official assessment, practising responsive clinical conversations and receiving appropriate observation of physical and practical skills. No single question bank, academy or AI patient should be assumed to demonstrate all three. Choose resources by the work they enable you to do, not by a promise that one course contains the examination.

PLAB 2 uses individual bookings rather than a universal November sitting. The GMC's PLAB 2 guide, checked on 3 October 2026, describes an OSCE with 16 scenarios lasting eight minutes each. This article is published by iatroX and includes iatroX in the comparison; the assessment below concerns published offerings and preparation tasks, not independently measured pass rates.

Official materials establish the task

Read the GMC's candidate information before deciding what additional practice to purchase. Its assessment explanation, checked on 3 October 2026, distinguishes data gathering and assessment, clinical management and interpersonal skills. This helps explain why sounding fluent is not enough and why factual knowledge alone does not establish station performance.

Use official sample material to identify the task, the information supplied and the interaction expected. Notice the difference between being asked to gather information, explain an issue or demonstrate a practical skill. A resource that prepares you well for one may be insufficient for another.

The GMC's preparation guidance, checked on 3 October 2026, does not require candidates to attend a commercial course and does not endorse or quality-assure those courses. Treat claims of official approval accordingly. Avoid material presented as recalled confidential examination content.

Academies and courses: inspect the teaching you will actually receive

A course may be useful when it provides appropriate facilities, experienced observation and opportunities to repeat a difficult task after feedback. Ask how much time you will spend performing rather than watching, who observes the work and whether the practical teaching matches the skills you need.

For a candidate whose main problem is examination technique, access to suitable supervised practice may justify the travel and course cost. For someone who mainly needs repeated conversation practice, an expensive programme dominated by lectures may be a poor fit. These are selection criteria, not assumptions about every academy.

Request the current schedule, access arrangements, cancellation terms and full cost before deciding. Include accommodation and time away from work in your own budget, but do not compare these with an online subscription as though they purchase the same service.

Study partners: inexpensive repetition with uneven calibration

A reliable partner can introduce uncertainty, ask an unexpected question and explain how your response felt from the patient's perspective. Rotate candidate, role-player and observer roles when possible so that someone can focus on what actually happened rather than simultaneously inventing the case.

Agree the feedback question beforehand. For example, did the candidate respond to the concern or return immediately to a prepared explanation? Did they establish the information needed for the next decision? A vague judgement that the station was good or bad provides little direction.

Peers can also share the same misunderstanding. Where there is disagreement about clinical content or the expected standard, return to authoritative guidance or obtain experienced teaching. Repetition within a group is not independent verification of the group's assumptions.

AI patients: useful repetition, with a defined boundary

PassMedicine's PLAB resource page, checked on 3 October 2026, advertises AI virtual patients for PLAB 2 history-taking within its PLAB package. Its advertised access starts at £12 for four months, with £25 for 12 months. This is substantially less expensive than iatroX's paid subscription, and AI patient interaction is therefore not unique to iatroX.

In iatroX's September 2026 simulation launch, PLAB 2 is one of the named tracks. The published design includes voice and text, practice mode with pause-and-coach, uninterrupted exam mode, transcript-linked feedback and Tutor-led remediation. One complete simulation is free.

A relevant use is to rehearse the behaviour exposed by a previous observed station. Inspect the exchange, decide what needs changing and try a different case. A digital conversation cannot establish that you can physically perform an examination or procedure, and a platform score is not a validated PLAB pass prediction.

Match the resource to a fictional candidate's actual gap

Nadia is a fictional candidate who speaks confidently but often gives an explanation before establishing the patient's question. Her first practice plan contains more videos and another set of model scripts. Neither directly tests the behaviour that caused the problem.

She instead arranges an observed conversation with a partner, asking the observer to identify the moment when she stops responding to the person. Between sessions, she uses a solo case to rehearse checking the concern before explaining. A later case changes the patient's priority so that she cannot solve the task by repeating the same words.

Nadia separately books appropriate practical teaching because she has not recently received feedback on relevant examination skills. The online activity is not credited as evidence that this practical gap has been resolved. This is a suggested preparation plan, not a reported result from any provider.

Compare feedback before comparing case totals

Useful feedback identifies an observable exchange or action, explains why it matters and suggests a next attempt. A long list of generic omissions may look comprehensive while failing to distinguish an important gap from a defensible alternative approach.

Ask whether you can challenge questionable feedback. In a human session, discuss the reasoning with the observer. With an automated report, inspect the transcript and check the clinical content. Neither source should be accepted simply because it presents a numerical score.

Library totals also need careful interpretation. A whole-platform question count is not a PLAB 2 case count, and a large collection is not evidence that you will receive suitable observation. Repeatability, relevance and the quality of the next learning action matter more than collecting the largest number on a dashboard.

Keep the purchase proportionate

According to iatroX's product information dated 3 October 2026, its paid subscription includes question banks, ongoing Socratic Tutor, study planner, simulations and CPD tools together for £29 monthly or £99 paid upfront annually. The annual equivalent is £8.25 per month billed annually. Simulations are included, not an additional charge.

Three monthly payments total £87; four total £116, so annual access becomes cheaper from the fourth month at those prices. That calculation is useful only if you have a relevant reason to continue using the service. An imminent candidate should not buy a year merely because the platform covers unrelated examinations.

Verdict by candidate scenario

Choose official GMC materials for assessment scope and instructions, not as a substitute for practice. Prioritise suitable in-person teaching when physical or practical skills are the unresolved problem. Use partners and experienced observers when the main need is responsive communication and calibrated feedback.

For inexpensive additional AI history-taking, examine PassMedicine's published PLAB package. For a broader guided-learning and simulation workflow, try iatroX's free experience and assess the feedback against your needs. Candidates with an effective combination already in place may gain more from changing the next practice task than from buying another resource.

Frequently asked questions

Must I attend a PLAB 2 academy?

The GMC does not require a commercial course. Decide whether one provides teaching or facilities you need, and assess its current offering rather than assuming endorsement.

Can AI patient practice replace practical-skills teaching?

No: conversation can rehearse reasoning and communication but cannot establish physical examination or procedural competence. Arrange appropriate observed practice for those skills.

Should I choose the provider with the largest case library?

Not on that number alone: compare the relevant case scope, feedback, repeat practice and skills that still need another setting. Whole-platform totals should not be treated as PLAB 2-specific evidence.
