Useful MRCEM OSCE resources help you make priorities explicit, communicate them clearly and respond when the scenario changes. Combine RCEM guidance, departmental simulation and focused independent practice. A longer list of remembered actions is not enough when the learning problem is deciding what matters first and explaining what you need from a colleague.
iatroX publishes this resource comparison and includes its own MRCEM learning tools. Recommendations depend on whether you need knowledge revision, spoken rehearsal or directly observed practical teaching. Product descriptions and resource availability throughout are dated 6 September 2026.
A candidate can recognise a clinical issue yet give a handover that buries the important information. Another can recite an excellent communication framework without adapting it to new findings. These are preparation problems that deserve targeted resources rather than another undirected round of questions.
Use the official examination material to set the task
The RCEM OSCE examination page provides the College's examination information and preparation guidance. Start there when checking current arrangements and the skills you need to demonstrate. A commercial course or simulation can support preparation, but it is not the source of authority for the assessment.
Separate knowledge, performance and practical technique in your revision plan. You may need a reference or teaching session to understand a topic, an interactive case to practise decisions and direct supervision to assess a practical skill. Treating all three as "OSCE practice" makes it difficult to see which resource is missing.
Use your local teaching opportunities deliberately. Arrive with a question such as "I recognise the need to escalate, but my request becomes unclear" rather than only asking to run another complete station.
An original handover exercise
Create a fictional case with an initial presentation, a change in condition and a clear reason to request help. Give a partner the role of the receiving clinician. Deliver your handover without allowing them to see your notes.
Ask them to repeat back the problem, your main concern, what has already happened and what you are asking them to do. This is a simple test of whether your message communicated its purpose. It is not an official MRCEM scoring exercise.
Next, introduce a new piece of information. Practise updating the receiver rather than starting again from the beginning. The exercise reveals whether you can distinguish the information that changes the plan from details that merely make the account longer.
Finally, shorten the time available. Preserve the essential message rather than speaking faster. A compact handover should still leave the receiver understanding why the situation needs their attention and what response you are seeking.
Compare resources by the feedback they provide
| Preparation resource | Useful contribution | Limitation to keep visible |
|---|---|---|
| RCEM guidance and curriculum-linked teaching | Establishing the assessment context and learning topics | Reading alone does not show how you perform |
| Departmental simulation | Team interaction, evolving scenarios and supervised debrief | Access depends on local arrangements |
| Peer role-play | Rehearsing escalation and concise communication | Clinical feedback may require supervisor input |
| Question bank | Testing relevant knowledge and discrimination | Selecting an answer is not the same as giving a handover |
| Online simulation | Independent rehearsal and review of decisions | Physical and team performance still need suitable teaching |
RCEM's own resources should anchor the clinical content. Use the preparation links on the College website to find relevant teaching, rather than relying on an uncurated collection of recalled stations. For commercial products, inspect a sample debrief and ask whether it makes a specific action visible.
Reassessment deserves its own practice
A scenario should not end in your mind when you have named the likely diagnosis. For a learning exercise, ask what information you would review next, how you would know whether your approach was achieving its purpose and what would make you reconsider.
You can test that reasoning without turning the exercise into a list of treatment instructions. Ask a partner to supply a different outcome from the one you expected. Explain how the new information changes your priorities. This exposes whether you were following a flexible plan or merely recalling a sequence.
During debrief, separate an omitted fact from a reasoning problem. "I forgot to mention the latest observation" calls for a different correction from "I did not realise the change altered the urgency". Write the distinction before selecting another case.
Where iatroX adds practical value
As published on 6 September 2026, the iatroX simulation release includes MRCEM OSCE practice, with clinician-reviewed cases and feedback tied to the encounter. Voice interaction is useful for rehearsing an explicit request or concise explanation; text review can help you inspect what you actually communicated afterwards.
Use Tutor follow-up to examine one decision from the attempt. Then return to a case with a related challenge. This creates a more focused independent session than completing cases simply to increase the number on a dashboard. Treat the feedback as learning support, not a validated prediction of examination performance.
As published on 6 September 2026, the MRCEM SBA bank is part of iatroX's free offering. It can help you investigate a knowledge gap identified in a scenario. Ongoing Tutor access and the wider simulation library are included in the paid learning subscription, rather than being separate examination-specific add-ons.
As published on 6 September 2026, iatroX's UK pricing is £99 a year, paid upfront, equivalent to £8.25 a month billed annually, or £29 a month. The paid subscription includes question banks, Socratic Tutor, the study planner, iatroX Simulations and CPD tools together; simulations and CPD are not separate add-ons.
The September 2026 free offering is separate from the subscription: Ask-iatroX and free question access have no trial expiry or verification gate. Free samples and designated free banks should not be confused with unlimited access to every paid bank or ongoing tutoring. The September 2026 simulation offering also includes one complete simulation free.
Which resource fits your preparation?
Use College guidance to establish the task and departmental teaching for practical performance. Where local teaching is already strong but practice opportunities are scarce, independent simulation can fill the interval; where the problem is knowledge, the relevant bank is the more direct starting point. Neither purchase should displace the other task without reason.
Frequently asked questions
How can I make a practice handover more useful?
Ask the listener what they understand the immediate concern and requested response to be. Revise the handover when those points are unclear, then test it with changed case information.
Can a high written score establish MRCEM OSCE readiness?
No. Written knowledge, prioritisation, communication and practical performance need to be examined through appropriate learning activities rather than one dashboard score.
Is the iatroX MRCEM SBA bank free?
The examination catalogue checked on 6 September 2026 lists MRCEM SBA among the free banks. Ongoing Socratic Tutor access and the wider simulation offering belong to the paid learning subscription.
