The AMC CAT MCQ exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions delivered in a single three-and-a-half-hour session, and candidates are expected to complete all of them. That works out to an average of approximately 84 seconds per question. Treating that figure as a rigid, per-question stopwatch target, however, is a common and largely unhelpful way to prepare, because questions are not uniformly difficult and should not be paced as though they were.
Why an average is not a target
An 84-second average across 150 questions still leaves considerable room for some questions to take 30 seconds and others to take two or three minutes, provided the overall pace holds across the session. Candidates who try to enforce a strict 84-second limit on every single question tend to either rush genuinely difficult items, increasing error rates precisely where care matters most, or feel artificially pressured on easy questions that could have been dispatched faster, wasting time they will need later.
Three broad categories of question, paced differently
It helps to mentally sort questions into three rough categories as they appear. Rapid recognition questions, where the correct answer is essentially clear from the stem, should be answered quickly and without lingering, banking time for later. Moderate reasoning questions, requiring genuine comparison between two or three plausible options, deserve a fuller but still bounded amount of time. And difficult questions requiring a genuinely controlled decision, where the reasoning is not immediately obvious, deserve the most time, but with a firm internal limit rather than open-ended deliberation, since the no-backtracking format means excessive time spent on one difficult question cannot be recovered later.
Using checkpoints rather than a running clock
Rather than watching the clock on every individual question, checkpoints at fixed intervals give a more useful sense of whether pacing is on track without disrupting concentration. Checking progress after 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 questions, against a rough time budget for each checkpoint, allows a candidate to notice drift early enough to correct it, rather than discovering with 20 questions remaining that time has run dangerously short.
Why completing all 150 questions actually matters
Failing to complete the full paper is a more serious problem than it might seem, because it can leave the adaptive scoring engine with insufficient data to generate a reliable ability estimate. Unlike a fixed-form exam where an unanswered question simply scores zero, the adaptive format depends on a sufficient number of responses across the full session to converge on an accurate score. Pacing discipline is therefore not simply about comfort; it is directly connected to whether the exam can produce a meaningful result at all.
Building endurance over six weeks
Pacing under genuine time pressure is a skill that needs building gradually rather than assumed. A six-week progression that starts with shorter, comfortably timed blocks and gradually extends towards full 150-question, three-and-a-half-hour simulations, with the final one or two weeks including at least one genuinely full-length, single-sitting mock, gives candidates a realistic sense of their own pacing under the actual conditions they will face, rather than an untested assumption.
Managing fatigue through the final third of the exam
The final 50 questions of a three-and-a-half-hour sitting are where concentration most commonly slips, and where pacing built during shorter practice sessions tends to fall apart. Planned, brief breaks where the exam format allows them, consistent hydration through the session, and deliberately practising full-length mocks rather than only shorter blocks are the most reliable ways to protect performance through that final stretch, when fatigue rather than knowledge is often the deciding factor.
