What Qualifies
Definitely claimable: Passmedicine (£35), Pastest (£50-100), FourteenFish AKT package, Emedica AKT Q-bank or courses (up to the £600 cap), Arora AKT course. Any recognised online AKT preparation platform approved by your educational supervisor and TPD.
The Emedica question: The full Pass Guarantee programme costs approximately £1,095 — above the £600 cap. Some trainees claim £600 and pay the difference themselves. Others choose a cheaper resource and save the remainder. Discuss options with your TPD.
Not claimable: The AKT exam fee (£470) — reclaim the tax via your HMRC self-assessment return. Textbooks are covered under a separate budget line (check local arrangements). Travel to the exam centre is sometimes claimable separately.
The Process
Discuss your chosen resource with your educational supervisor. Get TPD sign-off (some deaneries require this before purchase, others reimburse retrospectively). Submit claim to your deanery finance team with receipt and confirmation of educational supervisor approval.
Strategy
Since you get one funded AKT resource, the most common and cost-effective choice is Passmedicine at approximately £35. This leaves the theoretical £565 remainder unused — but the budget is per-category (one AKT claim, one SCA claim), not transferable.
If you want maximum funded value, consider Arora or Emedica courses that absorb more of the £600 cap — but only if the structured teaching genuinely adds value to your preparation beyond what a self-directed Q-bank provides.
