AI-supported study may contribute to relevant personal CPD, but talking to an AI alone is not participatory learning with another professional. The record must describe the activity that actually occurred. A tutoring transcript is neither a human reflective discussion nor evidence that a learning point has been applied in practice.
That distinction allows useful technology-assisted learning without giving it an accreditation status it has not earned. It also prevents the same activity being relabelled several times to make a portfolio look more complete.
The requirements that matter to this question
The NMC's CPD requirements, checked on 20 September 2026, specify 35 hours relevant to scope of practice over the three-year renewal period, including at least 20 hours of participatory learning. Participatory activity involves interaction with one or more other professionals, in person or virtually. The regulator does not prescribe one particular type of CPD.
The practical consequence is straightforward: assess what happened, not what the software calls it. A feature labelled "discussion" does not make an automated exchange a discussion with another professional. Conversely, using AI to prepare a question does not prevent a later genuine professional learning discussion from having its own value.
Keep the source of the requirement separate from this article's interpretation. The NMC describes professional participation; applying that distinction to an AI-only conversation means recording it as individual study rather than inventing a human participant.
One fictional learning need, three different activities
Leanne is a registered nurse who realises she cannot clearly explain why a particular observation is relevant to a care plan. She spends time studying an appropriate reference and uses a tutor to challenge her explanation. She then checks the cited source and writes down the question she still cannot answer.
That is one individual learning activity. A credible entry would identify the topic, source, actual study time and relevance to her role. It would not describe the tutor as a colleague or claim that her explanation has been observed in clinical practice.
Later, Leanne discusses the unresolved question with another registered professional. They compare interpretations and agree what needs checking locally. That is a separate human interaction. Its record should say who participated, what was discussed and how long the actual learning discussion lasted, without carrying patient-identifiable detail into the portfolio.
At a later point, Leanne may reflect on an occasion when she used the learning or recognised a remaining limitation. That account depends on a real experience. The earlier tutoring session cannot supply the later outcome in advance.
Write the record before asking software to improve the wording
Start with four factual sentences: what prompted the learning, what you did, what you now understand differently and what remains unresolved. Then add the evidence and administrative information required for your record.
For the fictional example, a first draft might say: "I found that I could name the observation but could not explain its purpose. I reviewed a professional source and used guided questions to test my explanation. I can now distinguish the observation from one possible interpretation. I still need to check how our local pathway assigns review responsibility."
The wording is modest because the activity was modest. It does not need claims such as "this transformed my practice" or "patient safety improved". A smaller, accurate account is more useful than an impressive statement that cannot be supported.

Reflective discussion has its own requirements
The NMC's reflective discussion guidance, checked on 20 September 2026, requires discussion with another NMC registrant covering the five written reflective accounts and their relationship to the Code. It also specifies an approved record of that discussion.
An AI can help someone organise questions to bring to that meeting. It cannot become the registrant, sign the form or retrospectively create an exchange that did not happen. Nor should a generic exported learning note be assumed to replace the regulator's required documentation.
A useful preparation question is: "Which part of my reflection rests on something I observed, and which part describes a future intention?" That helps keep the eventual discussion honest and specific. It does not require uploading confidential clinical material.

An accurate record can include uncertainty. "I found conflicting explanations and arranged a discussion" may describe more worthwhile learning than a confident summary that conceals the disagreement. Retain the source or other evidence that lets you reconstruct what was studied.
Do not count the same minutes twice because an activity produced both a transcript and a reflection. Separate activities only where separate work genuinely happened. The purpose is to make your development visible, not maximise the number of entries generated by one session.
AI can make a learning record easier to draft. Its most useful contribution is organisation; the professional experience and accountability still belong to the nurse.
