A useful dental learning activity is not automatically verifiable CPD. After ORE or MFDS preparation, build your personal development plan around the work you actually do, then check the evidence and timing for each activity you intend to claim. A revision log can identify needs; it does not retrospectively convert every study hour into compliant CPD.
The starting point is your registration and CPD cycle, not the examination's name. A person preparing for registration and an already registered dentist revising for a further qualification may be in different positions. Check the requirements that apply to you before making a declaration.
Keep the plan, activity and evidence distinct
The GDC's recording guidance, checked on 13 September 2026, distinguishes a personal development plan, an activity log and evidence supporting the CPD completed. Those elements work together, but none is a substitute for the others.
The plan explains why learning is needed. The activity describes what happened. Supporting evidence helps establish that the activity meets the relevant criteria. A certificate cannot supply a meaningful development need on its own, while a thoughtful reflection cannot repair every missing element of verification.
Start by reviewing the exact cycle and requirements shown for your registration. Avoid treating an older exam folder as a bank of hours to claim later. A resource may have been educationally valuable without having been completed at the relevant time or with the evidence needed for the intended claim.
Turn an exam weakness into a practice-relevant objective
Consider an original fictional dentist who has recently completed an examination and is starting a different clinical role. Their revision notes show repeated uncertainty about explaining treatment alternatives when a patient introduces a new medical detail. The topic remains useful, but the next objective should be expressed in terms of the work ahead.
A vague plan says "continue revising oral surgery". A more useful plan says "develop a clearer method for checking relevant information and explaining how it affects the options discussed with a patient". The dentist can then choose appropriate learning, supervision or feedback rather than repeat the same familiar questions indefinitely.
This is a planning example, not a clinical management recommendation. The appropriate scope of practice, supervision and decision in a real case must be established through the relevant professional arrangements.
A PDP-and-evidence worksheet
Use this original worksheet to prepare your plan. It is not a GDC template and does not certify an activity.
| Element | What to write | Check before claiming completion |
|---|---|---|
| Development need | A specific gap relevant to current or intended work | Is it more precise than an examination topic heading? |
| Reason | Feedback, experience or another genuine trigger | Have you described what actually happened? |
| Proposed activity | The learning method chosen to address the need | Does it match the problem rather than just fit the timetable? |
| Intended outcome | What you hope to understand or do better | Is it a future aim, not a claimed result? |
| Evidence | What the provider will supply and what you must retain | Does it satisfy the relevant verifiability requirements? |
| Review | What changed and what remains uncertain | Are benefits supported rather than assumed? |
| Next action | Further learning, feedback or revision of the objective | Has the plan changed in response to the learning? |
The worksheet should allow an activity to remain valuable even when it is not being claimed as verifiable CPD. That avoids an unhelpful choice between discarding useful learning and overstating what its documentation establishes.
Ask about verification before buying a course
As checked on 13 September 2026, the GDC's guidance for recording and submitting CPD asks for evidence including the participant, date, duration, learning content and relevant outcomes, with quality-assurance information. A document called a certificate does not automatically establish every required element.
For a prospective purchase, ask the provider what evidence will be supplied. Check whether it relates to the specific activity and participant, not merely the provider's general course catalogue. Resolve missing details before relying on the activity in a declaration.
Equally, do not assume that a course must be expensive or delivered in a particular medium to be useful. The purchasing decision is whether it addresses the need and, where a CPD claim is intended, whether the supporting arrangements meet the applicable requirements. Price and verification are different questions.
The GDC also distinguishes learning from tasks forming part of normal professional work. Keeping an accurate activity description is therefore important; recording an ordinary clinical session as though it were a separately completed course would misrepresent what occurred.
Where exam revision and iatroX can still help
This article is published by iatroX and includes its learning tools without presenting them as an automatically accredited dental CPD provider. In its September 2026 product description, relevant question banks and Tutor sessions can identify misconceptions and support focused learning. Their educational usefulness does not settle a regulatory claim.
The iatroX CPD page, checked on 13 September 2026, describes profession and practice-context selection, a private draft, learner personalisation and PDF export. Framework suggestions require the learner's review. A record documenting what you studied may help organise evidence, but this article does not establish that every exported record meets the GDC's verifiable CPD criteria.
For the fictional dentist, targeted questions could test the knowledge behind a difficult explanation. A subsequent discussion with an appropriate colleague could address application in practice. Keep the activities separate, retain genuine evidence and assess any intended claim on its own merits.
The UK all-access plan published on 13 September 2026 costs £99 upfront for a year, equivalent to £8.25 per month billed annually, or £29 monthly. Paid banks, Tutor, study planning, simulations and CPD tools are included, with no separate CPD add-on. Ask-iatroX and free question access remain genuinely free. The value proposition is a connected learning process, not a promise to award credit for everything completed.
Review the plan after the learning, not just at renewal
Return to the objective and describe the change honestly. The dentist might now explain the relevant options more clearly during an educational discussion but still need feedback in a suitable clinical context. That is a valid next step, not a reason to claim an unobserved improvement in patient understanding.
Retain the provider evidence alongside your record and follow the current retention and submission requirements. Do not replace the original documentation with a newly generated summary that loses the activity's identity or date.
For structured, verifiable activity, choose a provider whose documentation meets the requirements. For focused knowledge development, use the learning resource that addresses the gap, including genuinely free options where sufficient. Let the PDP connect learning to practice while preserving the distinction between development and the evidence needed for a particular claim.
Frequently asked questions
Can I claim all my ORE revision hours as GDC verifiable CPD after registration?
No automatic entitlement follows from having revised: timing, relevance and the applicable verification requirements need checking. Do not retrospectively treat a pre-registration study log as compliant CPD without establishing that it qualifies.
Does an iatroX PDF prove that an activity is GDC-verifiable CPD?
Not by itself: the relevant evidence must meet the GDC's criteria for the activity being claimed. This article does not assert automatic GDC accreditation or acceptance of iatroX records.
Is a learning activity pointless if I cannot claim it as verifiable CPD?
No: it may still address an important development need. Keep its educational value separate from whether it meets the requirements of a particular CPD claim.
