The GPhC has published a position statement on AI in pharmacy, including its approach to empowering pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to use AI safely and effectively. The position is pragmatic: AI tools exist, pharmacists are using them, and the regulatory response is guidance rather than prohibition.
The GPhC's revalidation guidance explicitly says AI can be helpful — including for grammar, reviewing revalidation records, reflection, and references. The joint statement from UK statutory health and care regulators says learners are increasingly using generative AI to support learning and that, when used appropriately, AI can be positive. Education providers should help learners develop AI literacy — including the ability to identify biased, inaccurate, or misleading AI content.
The message is not "avoid AI." It is "use AI responsibly, maintain professional accountability, and develop the skills to evaluate AI outputs critically."
What Accountability Means in Pharmacy Practice
Accountability means the pharmacist cannot defend a clinical error by saying "the AI told me." If the AI provided incorrect dosing information and the pharmacist dispensed without checking against the SmPC, the accountability rests with the pharmacist. If the AI missed a contraindication and the pharmacist did not cross-check, the professional responsibility is the pharmacist's. If the AI generated a counselling point that was incorrect for the UK-licensed formulation and the pharmacist delivered it without verification, the pharmacist is accountable.
This standard is not new. It is the same accountability that applies to every other information source a pharmacist uses. A pharmacist who relies on an outdated BNF without checking the current edition is accountable. A pharmacist who acts on a colleague's verbal advice without verification is accountable. A pharmacist who copies a dose from a previous prescription without confirming it remains appropriate for the patient's current clinical status is accountable. The AI is a new information source. The practical implication is clear: every AI-generated answer that informs a clinical decision should be verified against an authoritative source — SmPC, BNF, NICE guideline, or relevant legislation — before being acted upon. The verification step is not optional. It is the professional standard.
What Pharmacists Should Never Outsource to AI
Final clinical decision-making. The AI can inform by retrieving relevant information and structuring it clearly. The pharmacist decides by integrating that information with patient-specific context, professional standards, and clinical judgement. The decision is the pharmacist's, always.
Legal and professional accountability. No AI tool assumes the pharmacist's regulatory obligations under the Pharmacy Order 2010, the Medicines Act 1968, the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, or the GPhC Standards for Pharmacy Professionals. The pharmacist is the registered professional. The AI is a tool.
Revalidation authenticity. The GPhC explicitly states that using AI to create full revalidation submissions or falsify information is inappropriate. Reflections must be genuine — based on real learning from real practice. Generic AI-generated reflections that could apply to any pharmacist do not demonstrate individual professional development.
Medicine supply decisions without source-checking. "The AI said it was fine" is not a defensible clinical rationale if a supply turns out to be inappropriate. Every supply decision should be traceable to an authoritative source.
Patient-specific judgement requiring clinical context the AI does not have. Allergies, renal function, hepatic impairment, pregnancy, concurrent medications, clinical history, patient preferences, and the specific clinical scenario — the AI cannot know these unless explicitly provided. The pharmacist does, or should check.
What Good AI Use Looks Like in Pharmacy
Using AI to retrieve SmPC information faster — then verifying the relevant section against the patient's specific context. Using AI to structure counselling — then adapting for the individual patient's health literacy, concerns, and medication profile. Using AI to generate a draft CPD reflection — then ensuring it reflects genuine learning from a real clinical encounter. Using AI to explain a calculation method — then practising the calculation independently under timed conditions. Using AI to compare treatment options — then applying clinical judgement considering the specific patient's comorbidities, preferences, and clinical history.
In each case: AI assists with information retrieval and structuring. The pharmacist applies professional judgement and takes responsibility.
