Where AI Helps in Practice

AI can retrieve and organise relevant information faster than manually navigating the eMC, BNF, or NICE — but the pharmacist must verify the answer against the patient's specific clinical context before acting. Counselling preparation. Revalidation and CPD. The GPhC permits AI use for grammar, reviewing records, reflection, and references — acknowledging that revalidation documentation is time-consuming and that AI can reduce the administrative friction. The boundary is clear: AI can help structure genuine reflections from real learning experiences. It must not fabricate submissions, generate full records from scratch, or create false CPD entries. The GPhC explicitly states that using AI to create full revalidation submissions or falsify information is inappropriate.
Exam revision. Generating explanations, comparison tables, worked calculation examples, and "why not the other options?" reasoning. AI can explain why an ACE inhibitor is preferred over a calcium channel blocker in a diabetic patient with proteinuria — but the CRA tests whether the trainee can select the correct answer from five plausible options under time pressure. Why Medicines Information Needs Source-Grounding
Generic chatbots can answer medicines questions — but they draw from broad training data that may include US drug information, patient forums, outdated sources, and content from healthcare systems with different licensed indications, formulations, and monitoring requirements. For pharmacists, the source matters as much as the answer.
The electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) contains regulated and approved information on medicines available in the UK — including SmPCs, PILs, risk minimisation materials, and safety alerts. SmPCs are checked and approved by the MHRA or EMA. Information comes directly from pharmaceutical companies or via regulators. This is the authoritative source for UK medicines information.
A counselling point that cites SmPC section 4.6 is verifiable in seconds. A counselling point from a generic AI with no visible source requires independent verification of every claim — which may take longer than looking up the SmPC directly, defeating the purpose of using AI.
What "Safe Use" Means: A Practical Checklist
For every AI-assisted medicines decision, check: the source (is the answer traceable to the SmPC, BNF, or a NICE guideline?), the patient context (does the answer apply to this specific patient's age, weight, renal function, hepatic function, allergies, comorbidities, and concurrent medications?), the dose (is it within licensed parameters for the specific indication and this patient?), contraindications and interactions (has the AI flagged everything relevant — including UK-specific risk minimisation materials?), monitoring requirements (what needs to be checked and when — and is this consistent with any shared-care protocol?), and red flags (are there warning signs that require escalation to a prescriber or urgent care rather than pharmacy management?).
