Prescribing considerations
- Confirm the selected product's licensed indication and age group.
- Seek medical oversight in older people and those with renal or hepatic impairment because product-specific experience is limited.

Monitoring

Clinical pharmacology
Fexofenadine is the active metabolite of terfenadine and selectively antagonises peripheral H1 receptors. It is rapidly absorbed, is 60–70% protein bound, undergoes negligible metabolism and is eliminated mainly through biliary excretion, with a smaller unchanged urinary component. It is a P-glycoprotein and OATP substrate.
Formulation and product differences
- The selected products are oral, pink, oval, biconvex film-coated tablets marked “FXF” and “180”.
- They contain Allura Red AC Lake (E129), which may cause allergic reactions.
- Excipients and tablet appearance can differ between manufacturers; check the product-specific SmPC when allergy or swallowing considerations matter.

Check other medicines with a pharmacist or prescriber. Important examples include:
Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium
They can reduce fexofenadine absorption.
Apple, orange or grapefruit juice
These drinks can reduce absorption and make fexofenadine less effective; use water instead.
Erythromycin or ketoconazole
These P-glycoprotein inhibitors can increase fexofenadine exposure, although studied increases were not accompanied by QT changes or more adverse reactions.
