How does codeine phosphate + paracetamol work?
Paracetamol reduces pain signalling, probably mainly through central prostaglandin pathways. Codeine is partly converted into morphine, which acts at opioid receptors to reduce pain transmission. CYP2D6 differences mean codeine may be ineffective in some people and unexpectedly toxic in ultra-rapid metabolisers.

How to take codeine phosphate + paracetamol
Follow the pack label or prescriber's instructions and check the formulation before use.
Swallow ordinary tablets or capsules with water.
Dissolve effervescent tablets fully in a glass of water before drinking; do not swallow them whole.
It may be taken with or without food. Taking it with or just after food may help nausea.
Check painkillers, migraine remedies and cold or flu products for paracetamol before combining them.
Do not stop suddenly without prescriber advice after prolonged regular use, because withdrawal can occur.

Discuss pregnancy, planned pregnancy or regular codeine use with the prescriber rather than changing treatment abruptly.
