The AMC CAT (Australian Medical Council Computer Adaptive Test) is the knowledge-based exam that international medical graduates must pass as part of the AMC pathway to practise medicine in Australia. It is a computer-adaptive test — meaning the difficulty of questions adjusts based on your performance during the exam. Strong performance on early questions leads to harder questions, while incorrect answers lead to easier ones.
The AMC CAT covers the full breadth of clinical medicine, testing knowledge at the level of a doctor completing their first postgraduate year in Australia. The content is aligned to Australian clinical practice, which means Australian guidelines, the Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH), and the Therapeutic Guidelines form the reference standard — not UK or US guidelines.
Standard vs Competent Pathway
IMGs entering Australia can pursue the Standard Pathway (passing the AMC CAT and then the AMC Clinical Examination) or the Competent Authority Pathway (for doctors from countries with comparable medical training systems). The Standard Pathway is more common and requires passing the AMC CAT as the first step.
The Resources
AMCWise
AMCWise is a dedicated AMC CAT preparation platform with a question bank aligned to the AMC exam blueprint. It is one of the more established resources in the Australian IMG preparation market.
AMC Question Bank
AMC Question Bank offers a dedicated AMC CAT Q-bank with exam-style questions and detailed explanations. It focuses specifically on AMC CAT preparation rather than broader medical education.
AMC Pathway
AMC Pathway provides structured AMC CAT preparation resources including study plans and question practice.
Ace the Exam
Ace the Exam is a multi-exam platform covering Australian medical exams including the AMC CAT. It offers question banks with performance tracking and exam-style practice.
iatroX — Free Adaptive AMC Bank
iatroX offers a free AI-adaptive Q-bank for the AMC CAT. The adaptive algorithm identifies weak clinical areas and targets them automatically. Under a single free Australian account, iatroX covers AMC CAT, RACGP AKT, and ACEM Primary — spanning the full Australian exam pathway.
The clinical AI can be queried for Australian guideline information alongside international evidence. The clinical calculators include scoring tools used in Australian practice.

Australian Guideline Differences
Candidates preparing for the AMC CAT from overseas must be aware that Australian clinical guidelines differ from UK and US guidelines in several areas. The Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH) is the prescribing reference — not the BNF or Lexicomp. The Therapeutic Guidelines (eTG) provide disease management recommendations. Screening recommendations follow Australian government programmes, which differ from NICE (UK) and USPSTF (US).
Use Australian-specific resources during your preparation. Q-banks aligned to Australian guidelines will reference AMH and eTG. Using a UK or US Q-bank as your primary resource risks learning management approaches that are incorrect for the Australian exam.
Study Timeline
Most candidates prepare over 3–6 months. Use a dedicated AMC CAT Q-bank (AMCWise, AMC Question Bank, or Ace the Exam) as your primary resource. Supplement with iatroX for free adaptive weak-area drilling. Read the AMH and eTG alongside your Q-bank review — particularly for drug-related questions where Australian prescribing conventions may differ from what you learned.
