WPBA (Workplace Based Assessments) generate the evidence that passes your ARCP. But they are designed as learning tools, not tests. The trainees who use them for genuine feedback build better clinical skills AND stronger portfolios simultaneously.

COT (Consultation Observation Tool)

An assessor observes your consultation and provides structured feedback. The most valuable WPBA for SCA preparation — real-time feedback on your consulting from an experienced GP. Use different supervisors and clinical settings for each. Choose consultations where you want to improve — not easy wins.

Minimum per year varies by deanery (typically 6-12). More in ST1 (building foundations), potentially fewer in ST3 (demonstrating independence).

CBD (Case-Based Discussion)

A structured discussion of a case you managed. Tests clinical reasoning, decision-making, and evidence-based practice. Choose cases with genuine learning value — cases where you were uncertain, changed your approach, or made a decision under complexity.

Typically 6 per year. Different assessors for diversity.

MSF (Multi-Source Feedback)

360-degree feedback from colleagues across different professions and seniority levels. Usually once per training year. Select a diverse respondent pool — GPs, nurses, practice managers, pharmacists, hospital colleagues. The feedback reveals patterns in how others experience your work.

PSQ (Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire)

Patient feedback on your consultations. Usually in ST3. A genuine learning tool for the Relating to Others domain. Can reveal communication patterns you are not aware of.

Maximising Learning

Request COTs when you are struggling with a case type — not when you are confident. Discuss CBD cases where you were genuinely uncertain. Read MSF feedback reflectively — look for themes. Act on feedback and document the change in your portfolio.

Where iatroX Fits

COTs and CBDs generate specific learning needs. Use Ask iatroX to explore the clinical questions arising from WPBA feedback, and iatroX Quiz to strengthen the knowledge areas identified as weak.
