Australia has a well-structured, well-funded IMG pathway — with multiple routes depending on your training background, qualifications, and career stage.
Registration Pathways
Standard pathway. AMC CAT exam → AMC Clinical Exam → supervised practice → general registration. For IMGs without specialist qualifications recognised by Australian colleges. The standard pathway takes 2-4 years from initial exam to full general registration.
Competent Authority pathway. For doctors trained in the UK, Ireland, US, or Canada — may bypass AMC exams entirely. Requires verification of your training and qualifications by AHPRA/AMC. This streamlined route recognises the equivalence of training from these jurisdictions.
Specialist pathway. Overseas specialists apply directly to the relevant Australian specialist college (RACP for physicians, RACS for surgeons, RACGP for GPs, RANZCP for psychiatrists, etc.) for assessment of their specialist qualifications. Assessment varies by college — may require additional exams, supervised practice, portfolio review, or a combination. Some colleges offer expedited pathways for highly experienced specialists.
Area of Need Positions
Australia's Area of Need system allows experienced doctors to work in underserved areas (rural, regional, outer metropolitan) under restricted registration while completing full registration requirements. These positions provide immediate clinical practice, competitive salary (often with loading for rural locations), and frequently include accommodation and relocation support. For experienced doctors, Area of Need can be the fastest route to Australian clinical practice.
Visa Considerations
Skilled migration visas. Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage — employer-sponsored), 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional), 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme — direct permanent residency pathway). State sponsorship. Several states offer priority processing and nomination for medical practitioners. Priority processing. Doctors are on Australia's priority skilled occupation list — visa processing is faster than for most other occupations. The immigration pathway for doctors is well-established and actively facilitated by Australian authorities.
Lifestyle and Salary
Australian specialist salaries are competitive globally — often higher than UK consultant salaries, particularly in regional areas where additional loading applies. Work-life balance is generally regarded as excellent. Cost of living varies significantly: Sydney and Melbourne are expensive; regional areas offer substantially lower costs with higher salaries.
