First GP Locum Shift: What You Need to Know

Everything that was handled for you during training — indemnity, IT access, clinical protocols, supervision — is now your responsibility.

Before the Shift

Indemnity. Verify your policy covers locum/sessional work specifically. Training indemnity does not automatically extend. MDU, MPS, MDDUS — check your policy type. NHS smartcard. Arrange access with the practice in advance — they may need to set up your login. Session details. Confirm start time, room, patient list length, admin expectations, home visit policy.

SuperPlan. NASGP's locum insurance covering cancellation and sickness. Worth considering before your first session.

IT Setup

EMIS or SystmOne login (arranged by the practice). Familiarise yourself with the system's clinical templates and prescription workflow. Check EPS (Electronic Prescription Service) access.

AI Scribe

Set up Heidi Health free tier before your first shift — not during it. The portable scribe works in any practice. Test it in advance so you are confident with the workflow.

Clinical Reference

iatroX, BNF, CKS — have all accessible on your phone as backup. Every practice has different local pathways — ask reception for referral forms, local formulary, and any practice-specific protocols.

On the Day

Arrive 15 minutes early. Introduce yourself to reception and the practice nurse. Check emergency drug location and anaphylaxis kit. Review any practice-specific protocols. Ask about home visit expectations.

After the Shift

Complete all clinical notes. Sign off results (clarify with the practice who handles results follow-up). Submit invoice or timesheet.

Where iatroX Fits

iatroX is the portable clinical toolkit — guideline Q&A, clinical calculators, and CPD documentation travel with you to every practice without setup or subscription.
