Internal medicine board preparation does not have to break the bank. Between society-provided resources, institutional access, free podcasts, and affordable adaptive tools, a strong ABIM stack is achievable at minimal personal cost.

Free/affordable Q-banks. iatroX ABIM adaptive mode ($99/year — covers ABIM alongside all other US boards on one subscription). If your programme provides MKSAP access (many do), the MKSAP question sets are included at no personal cost.

Society content. The American College of Physicians (ACP) provides educational modules and clinical practice guidelines directly relevant to ABIM content. IDSA (Infectious Diseases Society of America), AHA (American Heart Association), and ACS (American Cancer Society) all publish clinical guidelines that are free online and directly tested on ABIM boards. Learning these guidelines from the source is free and more authoritative than any Q-bank explanation.

Podcasts. The Curbsiders is the standout — internal medicine topics covered in a conversational, engaging format that works on commute or during exercise. Clinical Problem Solvers provides diagnostic reasoning walkthroughs. Core IM covers high-yield IM topics. All free, all commute-compatible.

Institutional resources. Most residency programmes provide MKSAP access — check with your programme coordinator. UpToDate institutional access is nearly universal in US residency programmes. These two institutional resources alone cover a substantial portion of ABIM preparation at zero personal cost.

The cost-effective stack. iatroX ($99/year) + programme-provided MKSAP + free podcasts during commute + free ACP/AHA/IDSA guidelines = comprehensive ABIM preparation at $99 total personal expenditure. Add UWorld ABIM ($400+) if your budget allows for the deepest explanation quality.
