Are the SCEs Computer-Adaptive?

No, the Specialty Certificate Examinations (SCEs) are linear, fixed-form exams, not computer-adaptive. They are equated using Item Response Theory, which can cause confusion, but each SCE is a fixed paper: the questions do not adapt to your performance.

What the SCE format actually is

The SCEs are knowledge examinations in individual physician specialties, delivered as best-of-five multiple-choice papers. From 2026 they return to test centres using computer-based testing. Each candidate in a given specialty sits a fixed set of questions, so unlike an adaptive test that tailors the paper to each candidate, everyone faces the same items in that diet.

How the pass mark is really set

Since 2020 the SCEs are equated using UK trainees' performance as a reference, with anchor questions linking every examination in a specialty so that difficulty is consistent across diets. Candidates receive a scaled score, and the equated pass mark differs by specialty and can vary slightly by diet, so the percentage of correct answers needed to pass is not fixed. Standards are reviewed periodically by the examination board. See how medical exam pass marks are set.

What would be different if they were adaptive

If an SCE were adaptive, it would select each question based on your running ability and every candidate would see a different paper with difficulty rising as they did well, as in the AMC CAT, explained in how computer-adaptive testing works. The SCEs use IRT to equate fixed papers, not to adapt them.

How to prepare given the linear format

Because the papers are fixed, put adaptivity in your practice. Target your weak areas within the specialty and space your revision to retain them. iatroX's adaptive engine surfaces your weakest areas first, with free sample questions at iatroX.

Frequently asked questions

Are the SCEs adaptive? No. They are linear, fixed-form best-of-five exams. They are IRT-equated for scoring, which is not the same as adaptive delivery.

Why does the SCE pass mark vary? Because it is equated per specialty and diet using anchor questions, so the raw percentage needed adjusts for paper difficulty while the standard stays constant.

Does equating make an SCE adaptive? No. Equating makes scores comparable across different fixed papers. It does not change the questions you see based on your answers.
