To help manage hyperphosphataemia through dietary modifications, recommend the following:
- Control intake of phosphate-rich foods, especially those with a high phosphate content per gram of protein, and avoid foods and drinks with high levels of phosphate additives to help control serum phosphate levels.
- Maintain adequate protein intake at or above the minimum recommended level to avoid malnutrition, considering possible protein losses in dialysis patients.
- Provide individualised dietary advice through a specialist renal dietitian or trained healthcare professional, tailored to the patient's learning needs and preferences rather than using generic or complex programmes.
- For children and young people needing nutritional supplements to maintain protein intake, offer supplements with lower phosphate content, considering their preferences and nutritional requirements.
These dietary strategies should be optimised before starting phosphate binders and regularly reviewed as part of serum phosphate control.
